Pediatric Gastroenterology Unit
The Pediatric Gastroenterology Unit started its function in 1980. It provides scheduled inpatient and outpatient services for infants and children with food allergy, chronic constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, cholestasis, celiac disease, chronic abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, growth retardation, liver transplantation and other, less common gastrointestinal disorders. It accepts referrals from the greater Thessaloniki area and the rest of Northern Greece.
The following investigations and therapeutic interventions are performed at the Pediatric Gastroenterology Unit: upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, percutaneous gastrostomy, 24hour pH monitoring, lactose intolerance test, liver biopsies, Helicobacter INFAI test, RAST and skin prick tests (in collaboration with our Pediatric Allergy Unit) for various food allergens, antigliadin antibodies, anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies.
The Unit staff consists of 2 pediatricians with special interest in pediatric gastroenterology (Dr Ioannis Xinias, chief, and Dr Vassiliki Demertzidou) and one nurse. The Unit’s mission is supported by pediatric residents and PhD students.
